- Date of Issue: Wednesday, November 20, 2002
St. Catharines , ON - More than 600 Niagara Health System staff members reached a milestone year in their employment with the health system hospitals in 2002. And to celebrate these employment milestones, the NHS is holding two recognition dinner events for employees who marked 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 and 35 years of service in 2002.
"We are holding two events this year, one last week for staff from St. Catharines General Site, Niagara-on-the-Lake Site, and Shaver & Niagara Rehab Site, and another dinner is scheduled this week for staff from Greater Niagara General Site, Douglas Memorial Site, Welland Hospital Site and Port Colborne General Site," said Bunny Alexander, event organizer.
Among the 620 staff members being recognized, there are some significant milestones with several employees achieving 35 years of service. "We have four employees from St. Catharines General, one from NOTL, four from the Welland Hospital Site and one from the Greater Niagara General Site. Each of these employees is celebrating 35 years of service in 2002," Ms Alexander said.
"We are really pleased to offer the employees and their guests a dinner and reception every five years," Ms Alexander said. "They work very hard and often in difficult circumstances, and this is one way the Niagara Health System can thank them for that ongoing commitment."
There are also a lot of interesting stories in the work history of the staff. "We have one husband and wife team being recognized for a combined 60 years of service at the St. Catharines General Site," she said. "Altogether, we are honouring approximately 10,000 years of service this year."
The Niagara Health System employs more than 3700 employees at its seven locations. A recognition dinner for physicians reaching milestone years of service is being planned for January, 2003.
The Niagara Health System was formed on March 8, 2000 resulting from the amalgamation of the former Douglas Memorial Hospital (Fort Erie), Greater Niagara General (Niagara Falls), Niagara-on-the-Lake Hospital, Niagara Rehabilitation Centre (St. Catharines), Port Colborne General Hospital, The St. Catharines General Hospital, Shaver Hospital and Welland County General Hospital.
The recognition dinner for staff of Greater Niagara General, Douglas Memorial, Welland Hospital and Port Colborne General Sites takes place at the AmeriCana Resort & Conference Centre, Niagara Falls, Thursday, Nov. 21. Award presentations commence at 7:30.
