Our Hospital Sites

The Niagara Health System (NHS) is Ontario's largest multi-site hospital amalgamation comprised of seven sites serving 434,000 residents across the 12 municipalities making up the Regional Municipality of Niagara.

The NHS has almost 900 Acute Care, Complex Continuing Care, Mental Health, Long Term Care and Addiction Treatment beds. A wide range of inpatient and outpatient clinics/services are provided at seven sites. The NHS has 4,154 employees, 599 physicians and 1,100 volunteers, with an annual operating budget of approximately $400 million. More patient care statistics.

Fort Erie's Douglas Memorial Site opened in 1931, the result of a bequest from local doctor Dr. William Douglas. Today, this 46 bed hospital is a centre for the delivery of patient services in the greater Fort Erie area, for a population of approximately 30,000. Inpatient Complex Continuing Care beds and short-term Acute Care beds are sited here, with a number of outpatient programs in place to serve this busy border community. The site is the location of a 24-hour Urgent Care Centre, providing care and treatment for a range of non-emergency ailments. Other outpatient services include a Methadone Clinic and a satellite Ontario Breast Screening Program.

Since 1907, Greater Niagara General Site in Niagara Falls has provided community hospital and specialty care to Niagara Falls and surrounding residents, now numbering more than 85,000. In 1958, a new hospital opened on Portage Road, which today has more than 180 Acute Care, Mental Health and Complex Continuing Care beds, 24-hour Emergency Department, inpatient and day surgery, regional acute stroke beds, maternal/child services, intensive care and more. Greater Niagara General Site features a dedicated Geriatric Assessment Unit, the Regional Stroke Program and a Women's Health Centre which includes the Ontario Breast Screening Program. The Niagara Falls hospital is home to new MRI and CT units the new Jeff Morgan Emergency Department and new and renovated Ambulatory Care/Day Surgery Centre, serving about 225 outpatients each weekday. Plans are underway to open a 15-station Dialysis Unit to serve outpatients.

Niagara-on-the-Lake Site, in the heart of the historic old town, opened as a cottage hospital in 1921, and its current location on Wellington Street was built in 1950. NOTL Site offers a unique hospital-based Walk-in Clinic, where a nurse practitioner sees outpatients, supported by a team of family physicians. A supportive inpatient setting is also in place with a 22-bed combined Complex Continuing Care and short-term Acute Care unit. This Site serves a catchment population of 14,500.

Due to a temporary staff shortage, effective July 19, 2010 there are reduced hours for the Walk-in Clinic:

  • Monday to Friday -1 to 4 p.m.
  • Closed Saturday, Sunday and Statutory Holidays

Ontario Street Site in St. Catharines started as a maternity hospital in 1948 and in 1953 a new hospital was built, called Hotel Dieu Hospital. Since its amalgamation into the Niagara Health System in 2005, Ontario Street Site now operates a number of outpatient programs, such as a regional Dialysis Program including Hemodialysis, Peritoneal Dialysis and Pre-renal clinic, a number of day surgery programs and outpatient clinics. An Urgent Care Centre offers medical attention and treatment for people of all ages experiencing unexpected minor illnesses and injuries that are not life or limb threatening. The Urgent Care Centre is open daily 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Ontario Street Site also offers a range of Addiction Management services, including a 43-bed residence (separate men's and women's) for detoxification, counselling programs, and supportive post-addiction services. Construction is underway on a new healthcare complex in St. Catharines at a new location, combining St. Catharines' acute care and outpatient services in one location, as well as regional services including the Walker Family Cancer Centre, Cardiac Catheterization and specialized Mental Health inpatient services. The new healthcare complex is scheduled to open in 2013.

Located on the shores of Lake Erie, Port Colborne Site has served the residents of Port Colborne since 1951. It provides a range of inpatient and outpatient services to the community of 25,000, including a 24-hour Urgent Care Centre, providing care and treatment for a range of non-emergency ailments. As well, 46 inpatient beds for Complex Continuing Care patients are located here. A number of outpatient clinics, including a satellite Ontario Breast Screening Program and Eating Disorders Clinic, serve this lakeshore community. It is also the site of the regional New Port Centre, a residential facility specializing in addiction recovery, which offers a range of programs for men and women at the 35-bed centre, including a Methadone Clinic.

One of Canada's oldest hospitals, St. Catharines General Site started as a cottage hospital in 1865 and moved to its present location on Queenston Street in 1870. Today, this large community hospital provides a wide range of Acute, Ambulatory/Outpatient, Critical, Emergency and Surgical services to a catchment area of more than 160,000 people. With more than 200 Acute Care and Mental Health beds, it features new CT and MRI machines, Maternal/Child services, an Ontario Breast Screening Program, an Outpatient Oncology unit, and an inpatient Palliative Care/Oncology unit. The Niagara Regional Campus of McMaster University’s DeGroote School of Medicine is centred here. The regional program Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Treatment Centre, Niagara, with specially-trained nurses and doctors, is available through the Emergency Department. Construction is underway on a new healthcare complex in St. Catharines at a new location, combining St. Catharines' acute care and outpatient services in one location, as well as regional services including the Walker Family Cancer Centre, Cardiac Catheterization and specialized Mental Health inpatient services. Welland Site has been providing hospital care to Welland and surrounding communities since 1908. In 1960, a new hospital opened at the Third Avenue location, which today has more than 160 Acute Care beds (including 15 Nephrology beds), Complex Continuing Care beds, and Mental Health beds. This full-service community hospital provides Inpatient and Day surgery, Maternal/Child services, Intensive Care, 24-hour Emergency service, an Ontario Breast Screening Program, and a number of unique programs and clinics. A new Emergency Department and renovated Ambulatory Care Centre opened in 2003. A new Dialysis Centre opened in 2008, providing outpatient care with 21 dialysis stations. The hospital also operates a 115-bed Long Term Care facility. This site services a catchment population of more than 70,000.
