Our Hospital Sites
The Niagara Health System (NHS) is Ontario's largest multi-site hospital amalgamation, comprised of six hospital sites and an ambulatory care centre serving 434,000 residents across the 12 municipalities making up the Regional Municipality of Niagara. The NHS employs 4,226 employees, of which about 1,800 are nurses, and has approximately 945 beds, including long term care and addiction recovery programs. It is supported by a medical staff of about 560 physicians and is served by more than 1,100 active volunteers. The NHS provides care to almost 35,000 in-patients annually. Almost 200,000 patients are treated annually at our five 24/7 Emergency Departments and one 14-hour Prompt Care Centre.
The NHS forms a sophisticated and innovative network of health services, stretching from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario.

Fort Erie's Douglas Memorial Hospital Site opened in 1931, the result of a bequest from local family practitioner Dr. William Douglas. Today, this 55-bed community hospital is a centre for the delivery of patient services in the greater Fort Erie area, for a population of approximately 30,000. Inpatient Acute Care and Complex Continuing Care beds are sited here, with a number of outpatient programs in place to serve this busy border community, as well as a 24-hour Emergency Department. A Methadone Clinic is provided and a satellite Ontario Breast Screening Program opened in March 2008. Douglas Memorial Hospital Site has 24 active physicians.

Since 1907, Greater Niagara General Site in Niagara Falls has provided community hospital and specialty care to Niagara Falls and surrounding residents, now numbering more than 85,000. In 1958, a new hospital was opened on Portage Road, which today has 111 Acute Care beds, 24 Mental Health beds, 52 Complex Continuing Care, 24-hour Emergency Department, inpatient and day surgery, maternal/child services, intensive care and more. Greater Niagara General Site features a dedicated Geriatric Assessment Unit, the Regional Stroke Management Program and a Women's Health Centre which includes an Ontario Breast Screening Program. The Niagara Falls hospital is home to new MRI and CT units, and the newly-constructed Jeff Morgan Emergency Department opened in January/07. Renovations were completed in April/08 on an expanded front entrance and new Ambulatory Care/Day Surgery Centre, serving about 225 outpatients each weekday. Plans are underway to begin construction in late 2008 on a 15-station Dialysis Unit to serve outpatients. Greater Niagara General Site has 102 active physicians.

Niagara-on-the-Lake Hospital Site, in the heart of the historic old town, opened as a cottage hospital in 1921, and its current location on Wellington Street was built in 1950. NOTL Site a offers a unique hospital-based Primary Health Care Clinic. Nurse practitioners, supported by a team of family physicians see more than 130 outpatients per day. A supportive setting is also in place with a 22-bed combined Complex Continuing Care and Acute Care unit. This Site serves a catchment population of 13,000. Niagara-on-the-Lake Hospital Site has 9 active physicians.
The hours for the Primary Health Care Clinic are:
- Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday - 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Thursday - 12:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Ontario Street Site in St. Catharines started as a maternity hospital in 1948 and in 1953 a new hospital was built, called Hotel Dieu Hospital. After its amalgamation into the Niagara Health System in 2005, inpatient services were moved to St. Catharines General Site, and the Ontario Street Site now operates a regional Dialysis Program including Hemodialysis, Peritoneal Dialysis and Pre-renal clinic, the Niagara Diabetes Education Centre, a number of day surgery programs and outpatient clinics. A Prompt Care Centre offers medical attention and treatment for people of all ages experiencing unexpected minor illnesses and injuries that are not life or limb threatening. Ontario Street Site also offers a range of addiction recovery services, including a 43-bed residence (separate men's and women's) for detoxification, counselling programs, and supportive post-addiction services. Planning is underway to construct a new health-care complex in St. Catharines at a new location, combining St. Catharines' community hospital acute care and outpatient services in one location, as well as regional services including the Walker Family Cancer Centre, Cardiac Catheterization and specialized Mental Health inpatient services.

Located on the shores of Lake Erie, Port Colborne General Site has served the residents of Port Colborne since 1951. As a small community hospital, it provides inpatient medical and surgical care, ambulatory and 24-hour emergency care serving the community of 25,000 with 33 Acute Care beds and 24 Complex Continuing Care beds. A number of outpatient clinics, including a satellite Ontario Breast Screening Program, serve this lakeshore community. The hospital is also the site of the regional New Port Centre, a residential facility specializing in addiction recovery, and offers a range of programs for men and women at the 35-bed centre. Port Colborne General Site has 24 active physicians. The Emergency Department is being renovated in 2008 to provide better patient flow and more treatment areas.

As one of Canada's oldest hospitals, St. Catharines General Site started as a general and marine cottage hospital in 1865 and moved to its present location on Queenston Street in 1870. Today, this large community hospital provides a wide range of Acute, Ambulatory/Outpatient, Critical, Emergency and Surgical services to a catchment area of more than 160,000 people. With 222 Acute Care beds and 18 Mental Health beds, it features new CT and MRI machines, Maternal/Child services, an Ontario Breast Screening Program, a Clinical Teaching Unit in affiliation with McMaster University Medical School, an Outpatient Oncology unit, and an inpatient Palliative Care/Oncology unit. This Site is home to the region’s only Level 3 ICU, and the regional program Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Treatment Centre, Niagara, with specially-trained nurses and doctors available through the Emergency Department. Planning is underway to construct a new health-care complex in St. Catharines at a new location, combining St. Catharines' community hospital acute care and outpatient services in one location, as well as regional services including the Walker Family Cancer Centre, Cardiac Catheterization and specialized Mental Health inpatient services. Currently, St. Catharines General Site has 132 active physicians.

Welland Hospital Site has been providing hospital care to Welland and surrounding communities since 1908. In 1960, a new hospital opened at the Third Avenue location, which today has 119 Acute Care beds (including 15 Nephrology beds), 56 Complex Continuing Care beds, and 16 Mental Health beds. This full-service community hospital provides Inpatient and Day surgery, Maternal/Child services, Intensive Care, 24-hour Emergency service, an Ontario Breast Screening Program, and a number of unique programs and clinics. A new Emergency Department and renovated Ambulatory Care Centre opened in 2003. A new Dialysis Centre opened in June 2008, providing outpatient care with 21 dialysis stations. The hospital also operates a 115-bed Long Term Care facility. This Site services a catchment population of more than 70,000. Welland Hospital Site currently has 78 active physicians.
